Each October, war pensioner Jack Farrell would squint at the fierce sun beating down on Townsville and decide it was time to swap the searing Queensland summer heat for the cooler climes of Tasmania, time again for solitude on tiny Cat Island in Macquarie Harbour with only wild chooks and fearsome tiger snakes for company.
